MY STORY
I’ve heard it said we choose our parents before we’re born. That our choice
is directed by the lessons we would like to learn in the next lifetime. This
concept may sound harsh or unfathomable to those born into families with
hard lessons. I, too, considered this notion given my childhood experiences.
Why would I choose this?
I knew my parents experienced hardship, without question. They were
prisoners of war on German farms (forced labor) during WWII. My dad
was taken from his home in the middle of the night when he was just 17;
my mom was auctioned off to a German farmer when she was 18. After the
war, they met in a displaced persons camp in Germany, where they resided
from 1945 to 1950, still basically prisoners. They married in that camp and
had two children there, all the while surrounded by others having their own
traumatic experiences.
These five years were spent in this camp waiting to get on with their lives.
The camp was surrounded by barbed wire, and my parents had inadequate
food and clothing supplies for their family. They were continuously asked
to sign papers saying they would return to Poland. While they didn’t speak
often about these experiences, the way my dad told it, there were constant
attempts by those who ran the camp to “trick” them into signing these
papers. My parents had no intention of returning to Communist Poland. It
wasn’t until I was an adult that I came to realize their fear of visiting Poland
was rooted in their worries of being retaken prisoner.
I was the youngest of five in a household riddled with emotional
outbursts. My parents often fought. I was always on guard, walls up, closed
in, walking on eggshells. I joke now that I always knew when “she’s going
to blow!” (Star Trek reference), dreading I’d be the cause of it!
I didn’t understand why my parents had angry outbursts, seemingly
triggered by little things, or why my father suffered from what I now think
was a panic attack, with possibly others in the past. I didn’t understand
why my mother often seemed frozen in helplessness, with the cloud of
depression often shrouding our home. They just did. And that meant I
found ways to cope. This coping was a reflex, much of which I learned
later was exactly what my nervous system needed, like humming, rocking,
singing, and creating a hiding place for solace. These practices journeyed
with me well into my adulthood, with my yoga mat becoming my “place
of solace.”
